At University College – Part of Playhouse Plays Out
A new version by Clare Bayley
Gabriel. Swordsman, scholar, poet – the perfect Renaissance man – is told on their 18th birthday that they are, in fact, a woman.
Queer literary icon and ‘notorious woman’ George Sand‘s radical tale of a young person navigating the minefield of the gender binary was censored by Victorian audiences. Clare Bayley (The Enchantment, National Theatre) brings this pioneering play roaring into the present, exploring the cost of challenging the assumptions of a patriarchal society that values men over women.
Directed by Eleanor Warr (Home In Time For Christmas, BT Studio) and performed by students of the University of Oxford).
Clare Bayley leads Oxford Playhouse’s Writers’ Attachment Programme, Playhouse Playmaker.
