When Saul was king over us
Ave maris stella
Te Deum in D
As a previous audience member of concerts and recitals given by Queen’s Choir, we’re delighted to announce that ticket sales are now open for our Trinity term concert of choral music by Giovanni Bononcini accompanied by the wonderful period orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music and a star line-up of soloists, conducted by Owen Rees. Early booking is advised as tickets are limited due to continued social distancing requirements. Please book using the link above.
Bononcini was Handel’s main rival in London, and the pair were known as Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee by their contemporaries! Given how glorious his works for choir and orchestra are, it is surprising that Bononcini has now fallen into obscurity. We seek to remedy this state of affairs with this concert and are thrilled that several of the works will receive their first performance in modern times. Professor Rees has edited three of the four works – Te Deum in D, Laudate pueri, and Ave maris stella – from 18th-century manuscript sources now in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and in Westminster Abbey. Some of the copies are in the hand of William Boyce, and some were directly associated with or owned by the 18th-century Academy of Ancient Music. In the week after the concert we will be recording the works for a new CD with Signum Classics.
Please note that we are operating under government social distancing guidelines which determines how many tickets we can sell. More tickets may be released if guidelines allow. Therefore, if we sell out and you would like to be added to a waiting list, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org and you will be notified if more tickets become available. We hope to see you there!
