Saturday 8th November 2025, 3pm | St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Goring-on-Thames RG8 9DS
Discover the hidden gems of choral music from across the pond! While you may already love the soaring harmonies of Eric Whitacre and the luminous compositions of Morten Lauridsen, prepare to be captivated by the extraordinary voices of Canadian composers who are just beginning to enchant British audiences.
From the beautiful and accessible works of Toronto’s Eleanor Daley to the lesser-known Stephen Hatfield from Vancouver Island and Barry Peters from Nova Scotia on the Atlantic coast, this concert will transport you through Canada’s vast musical landscape of remarkable discoveries. You’ll also hear hauntingly familiar folk songs—from the beloved ‘Red River Valley’ that began its journey in Canada to the achingly beautiful Newfoundland song ‘She’s like the swallow’.
Connecting traditions old and new from the USA and Canada, programme highlights include:
• Eric Whitacre’s tender ‘Seal Lullaby’ (setting Kipling’s poem originally composed for a film that never happened)
• Rupert Lang’s world music-influenced ‘Mass for Many Nations’
• A fresh, moving setting of Robert Burns’ ‘Banks of Doon’ from Donna Gartman Schultz
• Randall Stroope’s passionate ‘Amor de mi alma’ This promises to be an afternoon of musical exploration and discovery, showcasing voices both familiar and wonderfully new. Come and let Goring Chamber Choir take you on this transatlantic musical adventure—we guarantee you’ll leave humming melodies you’ve never heard before but will never forget. Musical Director: Frances Brewitt-Taylor
Accompanist: Steve Bowey Where: St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Goring
When: Saturday 8th November 2025 at 3pm
Tickets: £15. Free for under-18s. Obtainable from a choir member, from Inspiration in Goring, from Garlands Organic in Pangbourne, or on the door. http://www.goringchamberchoir.org.uk/
