Henley Children’s Literary Festival
October 2 @ 9:00 am - October 10 @ 8:00 pm
From toddlers to teens there is something for everyone to enjoy in the children’s line-up at this autumn’s Henley Literary Festival, taking place in-person and online from 2-10 October.
Global fitness phenomenon Joe Wicks comes to Henley-on-Thames with his first children’s book The Burpee Bears for an all-ages show in the Baillie Gifford Marquee at Phyllis Court Club. His is one of several family events that will also be livestreamed to wherever the audience is in the world, alongside Tom Gates creator Liz Pichon, #DrawWithRob illustrator Rob Biddulph and broadcaster Clare Balding with her first non-fiction book for children, Fall Off, Get Back On, Keep Going.
Two former Children’s Laureates return to the Festival this October: War Horse author Sir Michael Morpurgo with a special performance around Carnival of Animals and Goth Girl creator Chris Riddell with a new version of Alice Through the Looking Glass.
For older children and their grown-ups educator Stuart Lawrence will discuss Silence Is Not An Option: You Can Impact The World For Change with Bourne director Paul Greengrass, who previously made a film about the tragic murder of Stuart’s brother Stephen Lawrence. And in an online-only pre-Festival event on 27 September Ace of Spades author Faridah Abike-Iyimide and fellow Young Adult novelist Amy McCulloch will talk writing with Daniel Hahn.
Events for younger children include Hugless Douglas author-illustrator David Melling, The Rapping Princess with Hannah Lee and Allen Fatimaharan, poet Joseph Coelho and an Elmer storytelling. For primary-age, CBBC presenter Jess French, Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Prize winner Serena Patel, Kate Pankhurst and Double Detectives author Roopa Farooki will all be appearing.
After record-breaking success at last year’s online festival, all schools events – with authors including Michael Morpurgo, Thiago de Moraes, Dr Shini Somara and Horrid Henry creator Francesca Simon – will be livestreamed.
There are also over 100 events for adults at the Festival, including Joanna Lumley, Michael Holding, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Jed Mercurio, Ed Milliband and many more. Full information and booking can be found at henleyliteraryfestival.co.uk.
