Free Concert by California College Concert Orchestra
Wednesday , 16 May 2018: A US college orchestra comprised of 66 musicians from Santa Barbara in California plays a free concert entitled the Three Rhapsodies at Wesley Memorial Church, New Inn Hall Street, Oxford, OX1 2DH on Wednesday, 16 May 2018 starting at 7.30pm.
The Westmont College Orchestra is an all-student ensemble from the college’s music department and is conducted by Dr Michael Shasberger. Founded in 2006 the orchestra performs both European and American orchestral repertoire including the commissioning of new works from contemporary American composers.
At Wesley Memorial Church, the orchestra will perform Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, A Norfolk Rhapsody by R. Vaughan Williams and Irish Rhapsody No 1 by Charles Villiers Stanford. The programme also includes two movements from Sean O’Boyle’s evocative tone poem Uilleann Sunrise and completing this impressive line up are show-stoppers; The Magnificent Seven, Hoe Down and The Cowboys.
The orchestra is made up of 66 college students aged 18-21 from Westmont College who tour every year. Recent overseas tours have included Italy, China, Hungary and Austria. This year they have chosen to visit the U.K for their international performances.
The concert is given with FREE ENTRANCE and unreserved seating
