Library Assistant
The Bodleian Libraries are looking for a customer focused Part-time Library Assistant to work at the Vere Harmsworth Library in the Rothermere American Institute assisting readers in their use of the library. The Vere Harmsworth Library houses the University’s principal research collection relating to the history of the United States, the largest such academic library collection in the UK. The postholder will also work at the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera one afternoon per week. This post involves working on Saturdays during University term time.
You will undertake a range of duties on front line desks, at all times providing high quality customer service to readers and members of the public. You will also participate in sorting/re-shelving books and collection management projects across the library reading rooms.
This is a permanent, part-time position with a working pattern which varies between term time and vacation. The postholder will work according to the following pattern:
• Term time = 23.5hrs per week
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday
• Christmas and Easter Vacation = 19.5hrs per week
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
• Summer Vacation = 15.5hrs per week
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
This role involves some regular manual handing and lone working. Full training will be given.
About You
You will be educated to GCSE level or equivalent, and have the ability to communicate effectively, confidently and courteously with readers, colleagues and the public. You will have good general IT literacy and a proven ability to perform routine tasks with care and accuracy. Reliability and the ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a team in a busy working environment are essential. Previous experience of library work is desirable and familiarity with ALMA / library databases would be an advantage, though full training will be given as necessary.
