Library Assistant

The Bodleian Libraries are looking for a flexible, enthusiastic and reliable individual to assist in the day-to-day running of the Bodleian Japanese Library and Bodleian KB Chen Library as required.

Your duties will include front-line reader services, working at the library desk providing circulation services, working with both the University’s online library catalogue (SOLO) and the automated library management system (Alma), and responding to reader queries in person, by phone and online.
You will also fetch and re-shelve books, scan extracts of texts for our Scan & Deliver service, and assist with projects such as the transfer of books to the offsite storage facility.
This is a fixed term (12 months) variable hours (paid as claimed) post.
This role requires lifting and carrying boxes of library materials, pushing trolleys, climbing ladders and kick-stools in order to access some of the library’s bookshelves and to re-shelve materials.
Remote working is not possible for this role.
You may be required to work on some Bank Holidays.

About You

  • A strong customer service focus, commitment to providing excellent quality service and knowledge of Japanese language are essential.
  • You will have a flexible and constructive approach to working in a team, as well as the ability to prioritise and work under pressure.
  • A good level of IT literacy including the use of Microsoft Office applications is important, as well as the ability to undertake routine library tasks with care and accuracy.
  • Experience of working in library environment and using automated library management systems would be an advantage, but any necessary training will be provided.
