Oxford Playhouse receives confirmation of Arts Council England funding until 2022
Oxford Playhouse is delighted to announce it has received confirmation of continued funding from Arts Council England for the next 4 years.
In recognition of the high quality of the Playhouse programme, its extensive work with young people and emerging artists, and the active part it plays in the life of the city, the theatre has been chosen to remain part of the Arts Council England’s National Portfolio with ACE funding confirmed until March 2022.
Arts Council England funding represents just 10% of the Playhouse’s turnover, but allows the theatre to keep ticket prices low, bring world class theatre to Oxford, ensure the diversity and quality of shows on stage and to invest in creative learning and education. Oxford Playhouse CEO/Director Louise Chantal comments “This is fantastic news for the Playhouse and it’s audiences. Put simply, funding from the Arts Council and our other core supporters means we can be a theatre for everyone in Oxford, not just the few. After today’s decision, we are now able to put into place our exciting plans for the next 4 years, which include the return of the Playhouse PlaysOut Tent touring free family theatre to some of the most isolated areas in the county, more home-grown productions and long-term investment in artists from across the country.”
“Although we are grateful to the Arts Council for recognising the work we do, it should be noted that the grant confirmed today represents stand-still funding. We receive £379K a year in revenue funding while contributing over £500k a year to the public purse in taxes, VAT and National Insurance payments (£ 579,390 in 2016-17). The funding confirmed today is only one part of a complex financial jigsaw, and the fact remains the Playhouse continues to earn over 80% of our turnover from sales. The most important funder of the theatre continues to be the people of Oxford who buy tickets, ice creams, programmes and coffees at their local theatre, and we thank them for their continued support too.”
