The Museum of Oxford is a history museum located in the front area of the Oxford Town Hall, on St Aldate’s Street.

The museum was first opened in 1975 and is considered as the only museum committed to telling the story of Oxford and its people. The museum showcases original artefacts and treasures from Oxford and the surrounding area and provides information about the history of Oxford and the University of Oxford.

The Museum of Oxford’s ‘Explore Oxford’ galleries presents the city’s past and present in two very different spaces. Exploring the past, visitors can have a look around a Victorian Office and see how the city has developed over the past 3000 years.

Continuing into the second space, visitors can take a virtual high-speed bike ride around the city. You can look and read about a variety of different characters from Oxford’s past and how industry, entertainment, work and invention have shaped the city we see today.

There is even more to the Museum of Oxford than Explore Oxford though. With a host of changing exhibitions in our Gallery, a variety of events ranging from live music to comedy in The Old Museum, family activities and fun throughout the year and an accessible and extensive community programme. There are also lots of ways to get involved with the Museum of Oxford through volunteering.

The Museum of Oxford is also going through a major redevelopment to expand what is on offer. If you would like to find out more, please visit oxfordhiddenhistories.org.

Opening Times

Museum Redevelopment – Oxford’s Hidden Histories

To make all of the spaces ready for builders and new exhibitions to be installed, the Museum’s Explore Oxford galleries and Gallery will close at 5pm on Saturday the 28th of April. During the summer, we will redisplay as many of the exhibitions as possible in our Gallery space. We will be opening a Micro-Museum in October. This will be a temporary exhibition so you can still find out about the history of Oxford whilst we work on building the new Museum of Oxford.
