Despite its name, New College is one of the oldest and most popular colleges in Oxford. The College is located in the heart of the city with an outstanding architecture and a beautiful garden landscape. The college is also well-known for its cultural and musical life and its excellent choir.
The college was originally founded by William of Wykeham in 1379 as an educational facility for priests. Today, the college welcomes undergraduate and graduate students and offers an extensive selection of subjects.
The college was initially named “The Warden and Scholars of St Mary’s College of Winchester in Oxford”. However, due to the similarity to the college of St. Mary the college was renamed to New College, to distinguish the colleges from each other.
New College was also used in the famous Harry Potter movie The Goblet of Fire, in the scene where Harry comes face to face with Malfoy who is sitting on a gigantic oak tree. This famous tree can be found in the New College Cloister courtyard quadrangle.
