Modern Art Oxford is a leading UK contemporary art space with an international reputation for inspirational and innovative programmes. Founded in 1966, Modern Art Oxford aims to make contemporary art accessible and engaging to the widest audience through presentation and participation. The programme celebrates the relevance of contemporary visual culture to society today. Their agenda is shaped by a belief in a dialogue between contemporary art and ideas, and seek to create new relationships between artists and audiences at the beginning of the 21st century.

Modern Art Oxford’s eclectic shop holds a wide range of gifts, jewellery and cards, as well as a selection of art books, artist editions, exhibition catalogues and contemporary craft and design.

Housed at the heart of Modern Art Oxford’s historic building, our cafe is a hidden lunchtime treasure. Over the summer months, the cafe is being taken over by The Handle Bar who serve exceptional coffee, a wide range of cakes and a varied menu of delicious dishes to cater to all tastes.

Hannah Ryggen (b. 1894, Malmö, Sweden – d. 1970, Trondheim, Norway) was one of Scandinavia’s most outstanding artistic figures of the 20th century. In the first major presentation of the artist’s work in the UK, this exhibition surveys her career from an early painted portrait created in 1914, to the intricate tapestries that characterised her extraordinary career from the 1920s onward. Modern Art Oxford’s Make Play sessions offer a curious and sensory space for children aged 6 months to 5 years with their parent/carer to explore and discover together. Inspired by the materials and themes of our exhibitions, each week will offer different experimental activities to help us make play.
