Alexandre Kantorow: Piano Recital,
Fri 5 Jun, 19:30 - 21:30
The Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, University of Oxford, Oxford
Alexandre Kantorow has quickly gone from “rising star” to one of today’s most sought-after pianists.
Described as ‘an exemplar of a new generation’ (The New York Times) the ‘young tsar of the piano’ (Classica) and ‘Liszt reincarnated’ (Fanfare), and for good reason. He is one of the finest pianists of his generation performing with many of the world’s finest orchestras.

The programme begins with Bach, reimagined by Liszt into a dramatic set of variations, and continues with Medtner’s sweeping early sonata, an underrated Russian gem. Chopin’s introspective Prélude Op. 45 leads into the ethereal radiant sounds of Scriabin’s Tenth Sonata. The evening ends with Beethoven’s final sonata, a profound work of storm, struggle, and transcendence.
There will be an informal 30-minute talk with Alexandre Kantorow following this recital, free to ticket holders.
