Marija Jelić soprano
Marios Papadopoulos conductor/piano In 1809, Beethoven introduced Vienna to his final work for piano and orchestra – a ‘grand concerto’ that would explode the scale of the genre and prove a model for composers from Brahms to Liszt and beyond. What we know as Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto, partly conceived in a Vienna basement as Napoleon’s troops bombarded the city, is a bold, powerful work espousing the values of freedom – the very values we can hear emerging in the composer’s Symphony No. 1 of a decade earlier and his dramatic vocal snapshot of rage and anguish, the concert aria ‘Ah! Perfido’. Pre-concert recital at 18:30
Featuring a Beethoven violin sonata
