Based on a poem by Malcolm Guite, Joanna Marsh’s ‘Refugee’ compels the listener to feel the pain and struggle of the journey for every refugee. Originally commissioned by St John’s College, Cambridge and first performed in January 2024.
With text by Kevin Crossley-Holland and a rich score by Cecilia McDowall, ‘Everyday Wonders: The Girl from Aleppo’ tells the extraordinary story of a Kurdish teenager with cerebral palsy forced by war to flee her home and embark on an arduous journey to Europe. In this five-movement cantata, a wealth of musical effects are employed to capture the narrative, including chorales, rhythmic spoken sections, body percussion and a solo violin part.
Written by Ukrainian composer Natalia Tsupryk, ‘A Quiet Night – Tyhohi Nochi’ sets text by renowned Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan alongside words spoken in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speeches. This new work, commissioned by SANSARA Choir, is a musical expression of solidarity with the people of Ukraine; it is also a catalyst for connection, providing a creative vehicle for choirs to meet and sing with all those displaced by conflict in their communities.
