The impacts of climate change will largely be felt through water.
Droughts, floods, storms, and extreme events are becoming more frequent and intense. The entire water cycle is becoming unpredictable, impacting people’s daily lives and livelihoods, especially those of poor and marginalised communities. Science plays a central role in informing decision-makers about the impacts of climate change and supporting adaptation to those changes. Meanwhile, we know some critical barriers to adaptation remain social, political, and financial.

What is the role of climate science in supporting adaptation to climate change for poor, vulnerable, and marginalised communities? Leading researchers and practitioners at the forefront of climate adaptation will reflect on the social and political barriers to producing, sharing, and using climate information, and on how it should be interpreted, accessed, and applied. They will discuss the needs and challenges faced by marginalised communities and how to ensure these communities have a say in adaptation decision-making.

About the Speakers:

Dr Alice Atieno Oluoko-Odingo is Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Population and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi. She holds an Honours undergraduate Degree in Geography, and Master of Arts and PhD in Agricultural Geography, from the University of Nairobi. She has published extensively on agricultural and food security, poverty and livelihoods, climate change, energy, gender and disaster risk reduction, ecosystem management, agro-biodiversity, health, cleaner production, and sustainability issues.

Bettina Koelle is the Associate Director of Red Cross Red Crescent Climate. Bettina Koelle is a geographer by training and passionate about exploring linkages within complex systems and helping people navigate challenges by designing and facilitating interactive processes of dialogue. She leads the Climate Centre’s learning portfolio and is the Southern African focal point for the organisation.

Dr Dorice Agol is a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and an International Consultant in Environment, Development and Humanitarian fields. Dorice works on various SDGs issues ranging from water, sanitation, climate change, natural resources, gender, youth, education, health and well-being, livelihoods and social protection, food security, environment, social and corporate governance (ESG), and environmental and human rights. She is an expert in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL), policy and institutional analysis. She holds a PhD in International Development from the University of East Anglia, a MSc in Biological Sciences and Natural Resources Management from Leicester University and a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of Southampton, UK.
