Sunningwell School of Art has an open-door policy and we have been educating people of all ages for almost 50 years. Our burgeoning, creative, artist-led community boasts 22 of Oxfordshire’s most contemporary professional artists and makers, tutoring almost 400 students across 47 classes weekly. The idyllic scenario of an old Victorian building nestled alongside the village pond, opposite the 12th Century church, belies the hustling hub and prospering cultural community that we work together to make.

We mix the traditional with the contemporary, build social and creative connections and empower students to expand their artistic horizons.

You can study drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics morning, afternoon and evening, 6 days a week.

Immerse yourself in our thriving community where quality education counts. You want to learn? We’re open.

Drawing

With classes for the experienced, the intermediate and the absolute beginner, drawing happens somewhere in the school every day. We have classes in life drawing, costume and portraiture, still-life and explorative and experimental drawing.

Painting

Explore and experiment. Our painting classes encompass all media, such as oils, watercolour, gouache and acrylics. Work with professional artists to expand your creative goals.

Sculpture

Working directly from the life model students are encouraged to work individually to explore, develop and create the human form in clay. Technical aspects of working with clay are also covered in our classes for both the experienced and the beginner.

Ceramics

We run pottery courses every day, for all abilities and levels. We have two large electric kilns and often have pit and raku firings. Our students can enjoy tuition from established professional makers in hand-building and throwing. You can also experiment with and explore the expressive qualities of clay.

Children and Young People

Our young artists start at 5 years old, and we have classes for ages all the way through to 18. We teach outside of any curriculum, allowing tutors to work with individual children and young adults in order to develop their thinking and looking skills. Younger children can have fun whilst being creative, and our young adults can work with professional artists in an art school setting to explore their own ideas and interests.
