Once nicknamed ‘The Marble Palace for Examinations’, the grand Examination Schools forms a key part of every Oxford student’s academic journey. As the name suggests, it was originally designed to house the University’s examinations and still honours this purpose in the present day, also serving as Oxford’s largest venue hosting a wide range of events both for the University and external hirers.

Visitors can discover the Examination Schools as part of Oxford Open Doors or by booking onto an Oxford Academia Tour, offered in partnership with the Bodleian Libraries. This exclusive guided walking tour brings together three of Oxford’s most important institutions: the Examination Schools, the Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre. These uniquely related buildings define the University’s academic and ceremonial traditions.
