SJE Arts at St John the Evangelist church is a warm and welcoming venue in the busy Cowley area of central Oxford with good public transport links to the city centre and to London. The church was designed and built for a monastic order but is now part of St Stephen’s House, University of Oxford. It is grade I listed and renowned for a superb acoustic.
We host a wide range of events – choral, orchestral, opera, piano, chamber, jazz, folk, pop, poetry reading – some of them put on by outside promoters and performers, others by SJE Arts. Our own promotions include choral concerts, with a Choral Festival in the summer, and our two Series which run through the year: SJE Arts International Piano Series showcasing SJE’s Steinway Model D concert grand piano and bringing UK based and international stars to Oxford and SJE Arts Next Generation Series, giving a platform to talented younger players making their way in the profession.
At SJE Arts we look after our customers: SJE is equipped with underfloor heating and padded chairs with performances on a raised stage to maximise visibility. There are modern washroom facilities, we run a licensed bar and for some events, pre-concert suppers are offered. In summer months guests may take their drinks out and sit in the beautiful cloister or wander around one of the many art exhibitions that use this lovely space.
