SJE Arts at St John the Evangelist church is a warm and welcoming venue in the busy Cowley area of central Oxford with good public transport links to the city centre and to London. The church was designed and built for a monastic order but is now part of St Stephen’s House, University of Oxford. It is grade I listed and renowned for a superb acoustic.

We host a wide range of events – choral, orchestral, opera, piano, chamber, jazz, folk, pop, poetry reading – some of them put on by outside promoters and performers, others by SJE Arts. Our own promotions include choral concerts, with a Choral Festival in the summer, and our two Series which run through the year: SJE Arts International Piano Series showcasing SJE’s Steinway Model D concert grand piano and bringing UK based and international stars to Oxford and SJE Arts Next Generation Series, giving a platform to talented younger players making their way in the profession.

At SJE Arts we look after our customers: SJE is equipped with underfloor heating and padded chairs with performances on a raised stage to maximise visibility. There are modern washroom facilities, we run a licensed bar and for some events, pre-concert suppers are offered. In summer months guests may take their drinks out and sit in the beautiful cloister or wander around one of the many art exhibitions that use this lovely space.

Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien first met as members of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme. The unique partnership which formed was noted by The Times in a review concluding: ‘Both of these players have the potential to conquer the world’. The pair has since performed throughout Europe, in North America, Australia and Asia and are regular guests at Wigmore Hall.

Two recognised interpreters of the Baroque form an inspirational partnership. Kristian Bezuidenhout is hailed as one of today’s most exciting keyboard artists, equally at home on the fortepiano, harpsichord and modern piano whilst Amandine Beyer has become a reference point for performance of Baroque violin repertoire.

In 2016, 20-year old Timothy Ridout was awarded first prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, the first British winner in the contest’s thirty-six-year history. This prestigious victory was to launch his international career. Last season he appeared as soloist with Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Philharmonia Orchestra and Young Musicians European Orchestra, made his debut in Musashino Hall, Tokyo and performed George Benjamin’s Viola, Viola at the Southbank Centre on the invitation of Tabea Zimmermann.

Following a sell-out début at the Church of St John-the-Evangelist in 2017, London Firebird Orchestra – one of London’s finest orchestra’s of the younger generation – returns with a programme of dramatic classics.

Mozart’s spellbindingly energetic Overture to The Magic Flute and Beethoven’s mighty Fifth Symphony are coupled with Tchaikovsky’s romantically, ever-popular, Piano Concerto no. 1. The orchestra is joined by pianist Marc Corbett-Weaver, recently described by Musical Opinion Magazine as ‘an interpretive artist fully immersed in the subtleties and considerable technical demands of each composer’s writing.’

Elected ‘Artist of the Year’ 2019 by the International Classical Artist Awards in recognition of a career that spans five continents, Spanish pianist Javier Perianes has become a familiar name in concert halls around the world. Recent highlights include international tours with Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern and Orquesta Nacional de España and debuts with Philharmonia Orchestra, Münchner Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic and at Theatre Champs Elysées, Paris.

Javier Perianes gave a memorable performance in the SJE Arts International Piano Series two years ago. His return is warmly welcomed.

Federico Colli is recognised internationally for imaginative interpretations and impeccable technique. Since winning first the Salzburg Mozart Competition in 2011 and then Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012, he has appeared with some of the world’s great orchestras. Of his London debut, performing Rachmaninov No.3 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Times commented: ‘played with formidable delicacy by Federico Colli, with limpid tone and calligraphic phrasing. Colli takes care to seduce before sweeping the listener off his or her feet.’

Since winning the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2015, Anna Tsybuleva has performed in recital across Europe and in the Far East and in concerto with orchestras including St Petersburg Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony and the Hallé. Exactly one year ago, April 26 2018, she appeared at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, under the baton of Yuri Temirkanov.

Cédric Tiberghien is particularly praised for his versatility, wide-ranging repertoire, interesting programming and dynamic chamber music partnerships. We have already enjoyed his performance this season with duo partner Alina Ibragimova, tonight he returns as a soloist, a role for which he also has a busy international career. Critical reviews are dazzling, The Telegraph commenting ‘He seems to have the poise and poetry of Chopin in his blood’. We look forward to the Chopin Ballades tonight, and to much more.
