Blenheim Palace loans Bernini masterpiece to landmark Rome exhibition

A celebrated sculpture from the prized art collection at Blenheim Palace has made a rare trip beyond its walls, to be loaned out as part of a new acclaimed exhibition in Rome.
The 17th century bust of Urban VIII, created by the world-renowned artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, has left the Palace and is now featured in one of the most significant exhibitions of 2026, Bernini e i Barberini, which is taking place at Le Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, in the Palazzo Barberini, Rome.
Curated by Andrea Bacchi and Maurizia Cicconi, the exhibition explores the extraordinary relationship between Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Maffeo Barberini, his first and most influential patron, who took the name Urban VIII upon his election to the papacy in 1623.
The event also coincides with the 400th anniversary of the consecration of the new St Peter’s Basilica (1626), a landmark moment both in the history of Roman Baroque and in Bernini’s career.
Carmen Alvarez, Collections and Conservation Manager at Blenheim Palace, commented: “It is rare that we loan any of our artworks, and for Blenheim Palace, lending such a celebrated work from our collection is an incredible honour. It allows us not only to support Dr Andrea Bacchi and Maurizia Cicconi in this exceptional exhibition, but also to showcase the splendour and quality of the Palace’s collection to a global audience.
“If you happen to be in Rome, we warmly encourage you to visit this beautifully curated exhibition. It is a rare opportunity to see our Bernini masterpiece up close; for those unable to travel to Rome, rest assured that the bust will be returning to Blenheim Palace soon.”
