Step into nature this National Walking Month at Blenheim Palace

This National Walking Month, visitors are invited to explore the historic Gardens and Parkland at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the majestic Water Terraces and hidden winding pathways of the Secret Garden to the sweeping lakeside views designed by Capability Brown, there’s something new to see during every visit.
Some of the best walks include:
The Formal Gardens
The Formal Gardens surround the Palace and include the majestic Water Terraces, the Duke’s Private Italian Garden, the Churchill Memorial Garden, and the beautifully delicate Rose Garden.
The Secret Garden
This spring, the Secret Garden will be in full bloom with hellebores in flower, and a rich tapestry of seasonal planting including epimediums, bergenia, rhododendrons and drumstick primulas. A newly created stump garden introduces a bold and textural ‘spiky’ aesthetic, with birch trees, ferns, and sculptural stumps forming the foundations of an evolving woodland garden.
The Walled Garden
The perfect walk for families to enjoy the outdoors as well as getting lost in the 3000 yew trees that form the historic design of the Marlborough Maze. Visitors can wander to the Butterfly House and marvel at the fluttering wings of its inhabitants. Within the Walled Garden, 40 new fruit trees have been introduced, featuring heritage and characterful varieties such as ‘Bloody Ploughman’, ‘Belle de Boskoop’, and ‘Belle de Louvain’, adding both historical interest and seasonal appeal.
The Lakeside and Cascades
Follow the Formal Gardens pathway, going past the Rose Garden, to eventually reach the dramatic view of the Cascades. Stop to listen to the sounds of rushing water and watch it flow over the rocks. If you’re lucky you may even spot a heron seeking out its dinner.
The Queen Pool
Begin this 1.5 mile loop of the lake either from the Woodstock Archway entrance at the end of the Woodstock high street, or from the main Palace entrance, Flagstaff Gate. Expect to see ‘the finest view in England’ which encompasses the Queen Pool, Vanbrugh’s iconic Grand Bridge and the Palace.
The Park Perimeter
Perfect for those who want more of a challenge and to really boost their step count, this circular walk crosses some steep slopes. The 4.6 mile route is fringed by the High Park woodland complete with ancient oaks and a whole new world of wildlife. This route is perfect for a solitary stroll; it is also a dog-friendly route.
Column of Victory View
The Column of Victory is the perfect place to watch the sun peek through the clouds in the bright daytime, or a stunning spot to watch the sun fall behind the building at twilight. The view is a short uphill walk that will boost your heart rate and get your blood pumping.
